What This Article Covers
If you're seeing a Syntax Error/JSON message when trying to view your Expected Visitors list, this guide will help you identify and resolve the issue. This typically occurs when visitor records contain formatting problems that prevent the list from loading correctly.
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Access the Expected Visitors List
- Open Google Chrome and go to your Building Engines login page
- Sign in to your account
- Navigate to Security → Expected Visitors
If you see an error message at this point, continue with the steps below.
Step 2: Open Developer Tools
- Right-click anywhere on the Expected Visitors page
- Select Inspect from the menu that appears
- In the panel that opens, click the Console tab at the top
Step 3: Capture the Error Information
- With the Console tab open, refresh the page (press F5 or click the refresh button)
- Look for error messages that appear in red text in the Console
- At the bottom of the Console window, click the Copy button to copy all the console data
Step 4: Identify the Problem Records
- Open a new browser tab and go to a JSON validation site, such as https://jsonlint.com or https://jsonformatter.curiousconcept.com/
- Paste the copied data into the text box
- Click Validate JSON
- The tool will show you which visitor entries are causing the problem (typically records with multiple or improperly formatted email addresses)
Step 5: Correct the Records
Once you've identified which visitor entries have issues, you can reach out to the tenant who entered the bad data to edit the email addresses associated with the records to restore normal functionality to your Expected Visitors list.
